Wallace Cross Mill Historic Site

Wallace-Cross Mill, a restored 1826 water-powered grist mill near Cross Roads in East Hopewell Township, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. In 1979, Harry Cross, the mill’s last operator, donated the building to York County. The Friends of Wallace-Cross Mill was established in 1999 to manage programs and ensure the mill’s preservation. The group hosts open houses from June to October, organizes fundraisers, maintains the museum gift shop, and plans for the mill’s future.

The Friends’ mission is to preserve and protect Wallace-Cross Mill through partnerships, artifact collection, structural maintenance, and educational programs that interpret local agricultural history. In 2006, the second and third floors were opened to showcase new displays of mill equipment and local milling history, complementing the functioning mill on the first floor. In 2010, a display on the Wallace and Cross families was added.

To maintain the mill’s operational condition, nationally renowned millwright Ben Hassett was hired to assess the building and equipment, conducting repairs and designing a maintenance plan in collaboration with York County Parks to ensure the mill remains in working order for years to come.
