As we celebrate America's 250th birthday, York County, PA, proudly reflects on its own place in the nation’s founding story. This is where the Second Continental Congress met during a critical moment of the Revolutionary War—where the Articles of Confederation were adopted and the United States first referred to itself by name. York’s legacy shines even brighter during this special time in America. Along the way, York County also marked its 276 years of local resilience, innovation, and community—further proof that history was, and still is, made here.
Several special events are planned around York County to commemorate this milestone:
June 26-28: Riverfest
Susquehanna National Heritage Area (NHA) will commemorate the Civil War burning of the world’s longest covered bridge. Riverfest brings the Susquehanna River communities of Wrightsville, Columbia, and Marietta together to celebrate history and recreation. As America marks its 250th, Pennsylvania honors 250 years, and Columbia turns 300, the Susquehanna NHA will bring those stories alive with expanded programming and one-of-a-kind heritage experiences you’ll only find this year. Learn more about local stories that connect directly to the larger American story and celebrate together. Join us on the river and be part of history in the making!
June 27-28: Northern Central Railway of York
Northern Central Railway of York invites you to an unforgettable two-day celebration of America's Semiquincentennial! On June 27-28, historic trains will roll along scenic tracks while living historians bring national and York County railroading to life. Enjoy live music, interactive educational exhibits, and engaging lectures, plus local food vendors and family-friendly activities. This event, featuring Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Rosie the Riveter, Uncle Sam, outlaws and peacemakers, and more, is perfect for history buffs, train lovers, and adventurers. Ride where history was made and celebrate 250 years of American spirit, innovation, and community.

July 3: “Freedom is Not Free” – A Celebration of the York Community and America’s 250th
Step back in time for a vintage World War II USO-style show and canteen, celebrating the unique role York, PA, played in American history, including the remarkable story of the York Plan, a model of wartime industrial cooperation that helped turn the tide of World War II. The Valencia Ballroom is one of a rare few traditional big band ballrooms still standing in the United States, and its storied stage has hosted some of the greatest names in American music. The evening will include dancing to live big band music by York's very own Unforgettable Big Band. The event will also honor our nation's fallen, pay tribute to those who have worn the uniform, and recognize the first responders who keep our community safe every day. Reserve your tickets today.
July 3: Revolutionary York Exhibit Opens
The York County History Center’s Revolutionary York exhibit officially opens on First Friday in July, at 5 p.m. July 3. Because space is limited in the third-floor Brougher Gallery where the exhibit is mounted, visitors are asked to register for one of two timed admissions, either 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. You can select your admission time here. If you can't make First Friday, stop by July 4, when you can celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary of independence seeing the exhibit, exploring the full breadth of York County history in the galleries, and challenging yourself with an American Revolution scavenger hunt.
July 4: History Made Here Independence Day Celebration
As the birthplace of the Articles of Confederation and a community deeply connected to our nation's founding story, York County is the perfect place to honor this historic milestone. Start your day with a free, family-friendly Cultural Fair from 9 a.m.-12 noon, in Lafayette Plaza and along Pershing Ave in Downtown York, featuring local organizations, interactive experiences, live demonstrations, heritage displays, and community partners that showcase the people, traditions, and innovation that continue to shape our region. Celebrate America's past, present, and future while discovering why history was made here all day long this Fourth of July!
At 4 p.m., the five-time Atlantic League Champion York Revolution will take on the Lancaster Stormers. A post-game celebration will feature a patriotic concert by the York Symphony Orchestra and chorus, followed by a fireworks display.
July 11: USA’s 250th – A Patriotic Celebration
Celebrate in star-spangled style with USA’s 250th – A Patriotic Celebration Train at the historic Stewartstown Railroad. This train ride brings American pride to life with special appearances and patriotic music. Red, white, and blue attire is encouraged.
August 19: America’s 250th at Springettsbury Park
This evening event includes live music from Dave Bray USA, stilt walkers, character meet-and-greets, and a drone show! Free and open to the public.
Bells Across PA
The ‘Bells Across PA’ art series commemorates the 250th Anniversary of the United States in 2026. These fiberglass bells were adorned and beautifully transformed by local artists and sponsored by businesses or individuals. There is at least one in every Pennsylvania county, and York County will be home to six once they are installed this spring and summer.

Note: Photo of the six York County bells is from the unveiling. They are not currently on display and will be installed spring/summer 2026.
