It’s Part of York PA History

The Yorktowne Hotel has a rich history that dates back to nearly a century ago. When it opened its doors in 1925, it was the place to be in York. It has served as a stop for everyone from U.S. presidents to Hollywood celebrities.

Behind the Renaissance revival-style hotel was designer William Lee Stoddard. Over the years, the hotel has grown and expanded, offering a welcoming stay to guests before closing in 2016 for a complete renovation. The hotel will reopen its doors January 31, under the Hilton name, and though it has every modern luxury you can think of, it has managed to maintain its historical charm.

James Parker, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing, hopes guests see the hotel “as the jewel of the crown of York,” much like it was in its prime.

The interior design blends modern and historical elements to create a unique guest experience.

“It’s almost like going to a museum,” Managing Director Michael Blum said about the hotel, which houses a dozen locally commissioned art pieces made of glass, acrylic, fiber, and more.

The hotel has restored various historical items, like the revolving door and the mural of a traveler, painted by artist Cornelius Hicks, which hangs above the front desk. The terrazzo flooring, original to the building, was found beneath the carpet during the restoration phase.
