Give Local York
Give Local York is a 24-hour online giving spree which benefits more than 300 nonprofits in York County, PA.
Give Local York began in 2017 when a group of community stakeholders and philanthropists sought to expand their impact by organizing a county-wide day of giving. The first Give Local York Big Give Day, held on Friday, May 4, 2018, raised $1.47 million for 211 nonprofits in 24 hours -- a clear signal of the community’s need for the annual event.
Throughout each Give Local York Big Give Day, held annually on the first Friday in May, participating non-profit organizations hold events and fundraisers to market their mission. These special events, music and dance performances, dine-outs, etc. encourage York County residents and visitors to support causes that are important to them.
One of the highlights of the Give Local York Big Give Day is the annual Facebook livestream. From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. dozens of participating organizations are featured in live interviews, some taking place at the Give Local York event-day headquarters and others in locations around York County. These interviews provide organization representatives with a great opportunity to promote their mission and explain how funds raised will benefit their organization and the services they provide.
Participating organizations are from all sectors of the non-profit world: health and wellness, social justice issues, animal rights, arts and culture, history groups, education, and much more.
Funds raised are maximized during the 24-hour event by matching funds, special prizes based on pre-determined criteria or exact donation time, and stretch pool funds. Certain organizations are also eligible for specialized additional funds; for example, the Cultural Alliance of York County provides stretch pool funds for arts and culture organizations.
York County residents can monitor the leader boards throughout the day on the Give Local York website, which also features a live feed of social media posts containing the #GiveLocalYork hashtag throughout the entire 24 hours.
The Big Give Day culminates in a giant community celebration to announce the day’s total amount raised.
