York College of Pennsylvania emphasizes critical thinking and active learning so students will graduate ready for their new career. Dr. Kennicutt, Professor at YCP, recently asked her students to be active learners when a member of YCSWA’s staff visited her class to create a vermicomposting bin with Civil Engineering seniors. A few days later, the group visited our waste-to-energy facility, the York County Resource Recovery Center, for a tour.

We hope these students enjoyed their time with us as much as we enjoyed our time with them. Best wishes to them as they prepare to graduate!

Junior Achievement of South Central PA is “inspiring tomorrows” through financial literacy and career exploration programs. They have done and are doing amazing things for students in our community and that is why YCSWA has chosen to be a sponsor.

As a sponsor of Junior Achievement, a member of our staff was invited to inaugurate the Mayor of Biztown. Community Services Division Manager, Jen Cristofoletti, was more than happy to pay a visit to Biztown for this honor.

It is our privilege to support Junior Achievement and work together to meet our common goal to provide worthwhile services to the residents of York County.

Do Not Put Rechargeable Batteries In Your Curbside Trash or Recycling Bin!

If you own a cellphone or power tool, you own a rechargeable battery. While convenient during their lifetime, rechargeable batteries require proper disposal when they are no longer usable.

Conventional disposal of these types of batteries in your curbside pickup can cause problems! Trash is compacted both in the garbage truck and at our waste-to-energy facility. When subjected to intense pressure these batteries combust and ignite causing fires in either garbage trucks or at our facility. Rechargeable batteries are also unsafe to put in your recycling bin.

Visit www.ycswa.com/batteries/ for a listing of collection sites for these potentially hazardous batteries. You can also visit www.ycswa.com/hazardous-waste-event/ for more details on rechargeable battery collection at our annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection event.

NOTE: Household alkaline batteries like Eveready, Duracell (AA, AAA, 9-volt, C, or D sizes) can be disposed in your regular trash.
