Scott Mingus will present on “The Northern Central Railway in the Civil War: The Story Behind Steam into History”.
The Northern Central Railway between Harrisburg, PA, and Baltimore, MD, was a major supply route for the Union army during the Civil War, as well as a leading commercial and passenger line for the populace of central Pennsylvania. Feeder lines ran from Reading and other towns to Columbia, where a spur connected with the main line at York. Another connecting line ran west from Hanover Junction through Hanover to Gettysburg. Author Scott Mingus will discuss the role of the railroad to the war effort and Confederate efforts to destroy its infrastructure, as well as describing Abraham Lincoln’s visit to Gettysburg on the Northern Central to deliver the Gettysburg Address.
