YORK, PA-The York County Convention & Visitors Bureau welcomes hundreds of teams and thousands of participants and spectators back for the 2015 Martin Luther King Kickoff Classic Volleyball Tournament this weekend.

The tournament is the first major sporting event hosted by the York County CVB in 2015 and is expected to generate nearly $3.5 million in economic impact for the local community.

The MLK Kickoff Classic serves as a well-timed venue for college recruitment. Approximately 160 girls youth volleyball teams will compete in York County for the second time as part of the tournament this year out of approximately 475 teams playing in both host communities.

Players range in age from 12 to 18 years old and the tournament takes place Saturday, January 17, through Monday, January 19, in York County and Lancaster County. The MLK Kickoff Classic began in Philadelphia in 1995, later moved to Lancaster County and expanded in 2014 to include play in York County. Teams this year are coming from as far away as Puerto Rico.

"The ability of the York County CVB's Sport York initiative to facilitate growth of such a major sporting event taking place now in two host communities shows the strength of our program and partner facilities to respond to fit the needs of customers in increasingly diverse ways," said Laura Gurreri, the York County CVB's Director of Sales who leads Sport York efforts.

The York County Convention & Visitors Bureau's Sport York program is designed to recruit events and generate additional economic impact in York County. Sport York positions York County as Pennsylvania's Premier Sports Destination, highlighting the area's dynamic facilities and central location on the East Coast.
